But some critics of C are not satisfied with this kind of answer. Even if there are consequentialist grounds for cultivating special relationships, there is, they urge, a pragmatic inconsistency between being a consequentialist and being a bona fide parent, spouse, friend, etc. A representative version of this objection is offered by Neera Kapur, who attempts to show the incompatibility of consequentialism with non-instrumental or end friendship.35 (Her argument, however, is, mutatis mutandis, equally relevant to other kinds of personal relationships.)
No consequentialist, says Kapur, can be a true friend—that is, can value a friendship for its own sake, as an end—sinceif I accept [consequentialism], the moral justification I must give for my friendship is instrumental. And acceptance of an instrumental justification of friendship […] is logically inconsistent with the attitudes and motivations of end friendship, and so with regarding friendship as an intrinsic value.36
